18th-Century French Louis XVI Oak Commode with Carved Laurel Swags

This elegant French chest of drawers dates from the second half of the 18th century and is firmly rooted in the Louis XVI period. Constructed in solid oak, it presents a refined yet restrained neoclassical aesthetic, with a rectilinear case set on slender tapered legs terminating in small turned feet. The façade is composed of three long drawers, each framed with finely carved mouldings and enriched with symmetrical carved swags of laurel leaves suspended from ribbon-tied rosettes. The corners are articulated with carved fluting, while the lower frieze is decorated with a continuous band of stylised oval and rosette motifs, further reinforcing the classical vocabulary of the piece. The chest retains its original bronze mounts and escutcheons, now with a richly oxidised verdigris patina, including oval drawer pulls centred by classical profile medallions and original keyholes aligned along the central axis. The oak surface shows a warm, time-softened colour with visible grain and honest wear consistent with age, suggesting minimal later intervention. The top is a single solid plank with a subtle moulded edge. Overall, this is a well-proportioned and authentic provincial French commode, combining robust construction with delicate ornamentation, and exemplifying the transition from Rococo curves to the clarity and balance of late 18th-century neoclassicism.
